Ali was born in Tehran in 1976 and migrated to Australia in 1991. He graduated with honours in creative arts from Griffith University and holds a PhD in professional writing from Deakin University. He has taught at universities in Australia, China, Turkey and United Arab Emirates, and has also worked as a street performer, hairwrapper, and delivery driver. He is a writer of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, drama and literary criticism. Ali’s latest book is Transactions (UQP, 2013), described as ‘a truly global and uncompromisingly frank narrative’. He is a lecturer in creative writing at Monash University.
