Michael Winkler won the 2016 Calibre Essay Prize for The Great Red Whale, which was printed in Australian Book Review and included in The Best Australian Essays 2016. Winkler’s background includes working in radio and television current affairs. He has written for most major Australian news publications, and literary publications including Griffith Review, Meanjin, Overland and Going Down Swinging. He frequently writes reviews for Australian Book Review. Recent books include Fahfangoolah! The Despised and Indispensable Welcome to Woop Woop, Grungewick: Gritty and Gruesome News Stories of Early Brunswick and Unsung Heroes: True Stories from the Stockman’s Hall of Fame.
