In the heart of Melbourne’s inner west, Footscray Community Arts Centre is an arts and culture hub for local, regional and international communities. Throughout the Melbourne Writers Festival, Footscray Community Arts Centre will play host to a range of events that explore the power of art – from amplifying voices through live poetry and performance, to the role of art-making as activism.
West Writers: In Parallel Universes:Sharing stories from Melbourne’s west, Footscray Community Arts Centre’s West Writers Group will exhibit the works of their collective. Aiming to amplify the stories and voices of the region, this event will showcase the group in performance. The Lebs: Experience award-winning writer Michael Mohammed Ahmad’s confronting, claustrophobic, violent and unrelentingly authentic new novel The Lebs, with dramatic readings and discussion. Hosted by Khalid Warsame and featuring readings by writers from the Footscray community. 1 Sep, 10am
First Nations Art & Activism: Ryan Griffen, creator of the sci-fi television series Cleverman, and Katherena Vermette, a First Nations Canadian writer whose novel The Break is acclaimed around the world, discuss their creative practice and process, and the role of art-making as activism.
