Award–winning writer Fiona Murphy discusses The Shape of Sound, where she documents the cost of concealment and how she claimed her Deaf identity after 25 years of secrecy. Blending memoir with observations on the healthcare industry in a gripping book that ‘challenges how the reader sees the world’ (Fiona Wright), Murphy examines the social, environmental, economic, and political impacts of deafness and disability through a personal lens. Join Murphy as she discusses her thoughtful debut with Nadia Bailey.

Event artists

Nadia Bailey is a writer and editor from Melbourne. She was the recipient of the 2020 National Library of Australia's Creative Arts Fellowship for Australian Writing and the 2019 UNESCO Kraków City of Literature Creative Fellowship. She is working on her first novel.

Fiona Murphy is a Deaf poet and essayist. Her work has been published in Kill Your Darlings, Overland, The Big Issue and Griffith Review, among other publications. In 2019, she was awarded the Overland Fair Australia Essay Prize. Her memoir, The Shape of Sound, is about the corrosive power of secrets, stigma and shame.
