Writer and GP Melanie Cheng’s debut novel is an exploration of friendship across cultures and generations. Room For a Stranger explores Cheng’s gift for deep empathy. She talks to Anna Krien about finding the humanity in both her patients and her characters.

Melanie Cheng is a writer and general practitioner based in Melbourne. Her debut short story collection, Australia Day, won the 2018 Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Fiction. Room for a Stranger is her debut novel and second book.

Anna Krien is the award-winning author of Into the Woods, Night Games, and the Quarterly Essay Us and Them. Anna’s writing has been published in the Monthly, The Age, The Best Australian Essays, The Best Australian Stories and the Big Issue.
