In this year’s Peter Steele Lecture, award-winning poet and speechwriter Joel Deane speaks about the responsibility of words – reflecting on where poetry comes from, why it matters, and why it is time to reconsider the question of having an Australian Poet Laureate.

Joel Deane is a poet, novelist and speechwriter. He’s published six books, including three collections of poetry. His latest collection, Year of the Wasp, won the Vincent Buckley Poetry Prize and was a finalist for the Prime Minister’s Literary Award, John Bray Poetry Prize and Judith Wright Calanthe Award.
