Growing up, Vanessa Len rarely saw herself reflected in the heroes of the stories she read. In fact, she sometimes felt closer to the so-called ‘bad guys’. Her debut novel, Only a Monster, takes the classic story of a monster and a hero and turns it inside out. An Australian author of Chinese-Malaysian and Maltese heritage, Len talks about writing the kind of novel she always wanted to read—and how students can do the same, too.
