Hana Assafiri OAM: A Visionary for Community, Women, and Change

Hana Assafiri has dedicated her life to breaking down barriers that prevent women from thriving. Since opening the iconic Moroccan Soup Bar in 1998, she has created employment opportunities for marginalised communities while pioneering a unique, inclusive dining culture in Melbourne. Her approach—rooted in generosity, innovation, and community—introduced verbal menus and communal eating, shaping a hospitality model that fosters connection.

Beyond food, Hana is a fearless advocate for social justice, women’s rights, and intercultural understanding. She has initiated groundbreaking conversations through Speed Date a Muslim and Conversation Salons, creating spaces for dialogue on gender, racism, and progressive change. Her activism has earned her numerous accolades, including TimeOut’s Legend Award, induction into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women, and an Order of Australia Medal.

Recognised internationally, Hana’s work is a balance of bold advocacy and deep compassion. Her 2024 memoir, Hana: The Audacity to Be Free, captures her lifelong commitment to empowering women and driving social change.
