Translators are frequently the unsung heroes of our reading lives – we think we’re reading the words of García Márquez, Ferrante, Tokarczuk or Murakami, but we’re really reading the words of their translators.
In this thrilling literary joust, translators Lilit Žekulin Thwaites and Alice Whitmore go head to head as they each translate the same excerpt of a short, previously unpublished work by Argentine author Mariana Enríquez into English. They compare, defend and explain their choices, highlighting how intricate, complicated, personal and sometimes subjective literary translation really is, while Enríquez will reflect on her experiences of being translated throughout her career.
Join our esteemed guests as they illuminate the translating process and explore how differing translations can be equally valid. With host Gabriel Garcia Ochoa.
This event runs for 90 minutes.
In partnership with AALITRA.
Supported by the Faculty of the Arts, University of Melbourne.
