Drawing on his own experience investigating an ancestor for The Boy in the Dress, Jonathan Butler will guide you through the process of locating buried stories, choosing which narratives to pursue, contextualising your ancestors’ world, and finally, shaping your research into a publishable piece of writing. No prior research experience is needed.

This session moves beyond genealogy to offer practical advice on drawing inspiration from the messy yet fascinating stories in your own family history. Butler will also share helpful templates to organise and jumpstart your own research.

What You Will Learn
- Identifying the narrative: How to single out a story (and why it might not be the most obvious one).
- Navigating archives: A guide to helpful Australian archives and resources.
- Building a portrait: Techniques for recreating your ancestors’ world
- Marginalised histories: Specific strategies for researching marginalised ancestors whose histories may have been suppressed

What to Bring
Please bring a laptop or notebook to make the most of this hands-on, interactive session. You may also like to consult with an older relative or look over some records related to the family story you are interested in exploring before the workshop.
