Buckle up for a battle of wits as virtuosic translators Matt Alt and Haydn Trowell go head-to-head translating a previously unpublished satirical ghost story by Japanese cultural historian and folklorist, Hiroko Yoda.

Live at the Slam, our two translators defend their linguistic choices and justify how they convey cultural references and nuances of tone and meaning. Yoda – herself a translator – offers her own thoughts on the practical craft of translation and the joys and challenges of working across multiple languages. Hosted by Laura Hasegawa.
