Matt Alt

A Tokyo-based writer and translator, Matt is a contributor to Aeon Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and more. A long time translator of video games and manga, including “Dorohedoro” and “Doraemon,” his literary translations include “Zero Over Berlin” (Joh Sasaki) and "Japandemonium Illustrated" (Toriyama Sekien). A former co-host of the NHK series “Japanology Plus,” he is the co-author of “Yokai Attack! The Japanese Monster Survival Guide” (2011, Tuttle) and author of "Pure Invention: How Japan's Pop Culture Made the Modern World" (2020, Hachette).
